1968 Mustang California Special known as a GT/CS. What makes a GT/CS different? The GT/CS Equipment Package option added $194.31 in 1968 and included the Shelby fiberglass deck lid spoiler, Shelby fiberglass body-side scoops, Shelby fiberglass quarter panel extensions, functional louvered hood, rear deck stripes and side stripes with “GT/CS” on the side scoops, pony corral pop-open gas cap, Shelby exposed “twist” hood locks, and “California Special” chrome script on the rear quarter panels. Also there was a unique “blacked out” front grille without the Mustang corral or chrome trim, and the Lucas fog lights mounted in the grille. Oddly enough, a GT/CS could come with or without, the GT option and could come with any engine combination from a six cylinder to the 428CJ.

All California Specials were built in the San Jose plant along side other 1968 Mustangs. Beyond the prototypes, the California Special was not directly built by Shelby Automotive, but the GT/CS is the only non-Shelby built vehicle in 1968 to use Shelby parts. A total of 4118 GT/CS Mustangs were built. Of that number 2320 were like this one with the 289 2-V with the C-4 automatic transmission.

The MartiAutoWorks report shows this car to have been built as a dealer stock unit on March 25, 1968. It was sold by Jim Fisk Ford, Inc. in Los Angeles, CA. Factory options included Power Disc Brakes and Power Steering, an AM radio, Tinted Glass, the Remote Left Hand Mirror and F70x14 Wide Oval Tires. The color is Meadowlark Yellow (code W) with the Black Standard Bucket Seats.

1984 1/2 Mustang GT Convertible 5.0 V8, 5 speed
We purchased this car on November 22, 1985.  It was a Ford Executive program car and only had 1500 miles on it when we got it.  It still has very low miles and is un restored.
The car remains mostly stock except for the Chrome 5 spoke Cobra R Wheels.  This is considered an 84 ½ as it was produced very late in the model run.  Many of the upgrades that came out on the 85 GT’s were built into late 84’s like this one.  The only option that this Mustang wasn’t built with was an automatic transmission.  Production figures are difficult to pin down on these early Fox Body Mustangs, but I do know that Ford built 7,653 5.0 V8 Convertibles.  This isn’t broken down between automatic and manual transmissions or even the LX or GT models.  We have enjoyed owning this Mustang for over 20 years now and look forward to many more.
